Equipment

  • Mixing bowls (small and medium)
  • Whisk or sturdy spoon for mixing
  • Muffin tin or silicone cupcake molds
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Oven
  • Cooling rack for cupcakes
  • Optional but helpful:
  • Piping bag for frosting
  • Small silicone brush to add a bacon topping or swirl frosting

Ingredients

Cupcake Batter

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour or oat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder dog-safe
  • 1/4 cup natural peanut butter unsweetened, unsalted
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup cooked crumbled bacon (reserve some for topping)
  • 1/4 cup water or low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 egg

Frosting (Optional)

  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter
  • Small bacon crumbles for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with silicone molds or paper liners to ensure easy removal and cleanup.

Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder. This ensures even distribution of the leavening agent, which helps the cupcakes rise evenly.

Step 3: Combine Wet Ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, mix the natural peanut butter, applesauce, egg, and water or chicken broth until smooth and creamy. Make sure the peanut butter is soft so it blends easily.

Step 4: Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing, as this can make the cupcakes tough. Fold in the crumbled bacon gently so it’s evenly distributed.

Step 5: Portion the Batter

  • Spoon the batter evenly into the prepared cupcake molds, filling each about 2/3 full to allow room for rising.

Step 6: Bake

  • Place the tin in the preheated oven and bake for 18–20 minutes. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean. Keep an eye on them, as oven temperatures vary.

Step 7: Cool Completely

  • Remove the cupcakes from the oven and transfer to a cooling rack. Allow them to cool completely before frosting to prevent melting.

Step 8: Prepare the Frosting

  • In a small bowl, combine Greek yogurt and peanut butter until smooth. Adjust consistency with a tiny bit of water or yogurt if necessary.

Step 9: Frost and Garnish

  • Once the cupcakes are cooled, pipe or spread frosting on top. Sprinkle a few bacon crumbles for a fun garnish that dogs can see and smell.

Step 10: Serve and Store

  • Serve immediately to your dog as a special treat. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze unfrosted cupcakes for longer storage.

Notes

  • Use natural peanut butter free from xylitol and added sugar
  • Don’t overbake; you want the cupcakes soft and moist
  • Let cupcakes cool completely before frosting
  • Portion treats based on your dog’s size and dietary needs
  • Optional bacon garnish can also be used for training rewards
