Ingredients

  • 4 1⁄2 teaspoons Baking soda
  • 4 1⁄2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 3 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 1 1⁄2 cups Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups Boiling water
  • 6 eggs
  • 3 cups Sugar
  • 6 tablespoons Butter
  • 3 cups Vegetable oil
  • 3 cups Chocolate chips
  • 1 1⁄2 cups Buttermilk
  • 6 3⁄4 cups Flour
  • 3⁄4 teaspoon Salt

Instructions

  • The oven should be preheated to 350°F and the cake pans should be greased and floured. Beat the eggs with an electric mixer for about five minutes, until they are light yellow. Slowly add the sugar and blend until completely combined.
  • Prepare a separate bowl by combining baking powder, baking soda, butter, oil, cocoa powder, buttermilk, and vanilla extract. Make sure that everything is well combined. Once the eggs are mixed, add the flour and salt and stir until just blended.
  • For about two minutes, gradually add the chocolate chips. Incorporate the boiling water gradually and continue mixing until all ingredients are well incorporated. Assemble the cake pans and divide the batter evenly between them.
  • You will know if the cake is done when a toothpick inserted in its center comes out clean after 30 minutes. When the cakes are cool, remove them from the pans and let them cool completely on wire racks. You can then frost the cake as desired after it has cooled.
