Equipment

  • Non-stick skillet or frying pan
  • Mixing bowls (one for fish, one for slaw)
  • Whisk or spoon for mixing marinade
  • Cutting Board and Knife
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Citrus juicer (optional, but helpful)
  • Small spatula or tongs
  • Tortilla warmer or skillet for tortillas
  • Serving plates

Ingredients

For the Fish

  • 1 lb tilapia fillets
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Juice of 1 lime

For the Slaw

  • 2 cups shredded green cabbage
  • ½ cup shredded carrots
  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Sauce

  • ½ cup sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce or chipotle in adobo
  • 1 teaspoon lime juice
  • Salt to taste

Extras

  • 8 small corn or flour tortillas
  • Lime wedges for serving
  • Sliced avocado or pickled jalapeños optional

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Fish

  • Pat the tilapia fillets dry with a paper towel. In a small bowl, mix paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Rub this spice blend evenly over the fish and drizzle with lime juice. Let it marinate for 5–10 minutes while you prepare the slaw.

Step 2: Make the Slaw

  • In a medium bowl, combine shredded cabbage, carrots, and cilantro. Add lime juice, mayonnaise, salt, and pepper. Toss well to coat all the vegetables evenly. Chill in the fridge until ready to assemble tacos.

Step 3: Make the Sauce

  • Mix sour cream, mayonnaise, hot sauce, lime juice, and a pinch of salt in a small bowl. Adjust seasoning to taste. Set aside.

Step 4: Cook the Fish

  • Heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the tilapia fillets and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, until the fish flakes easily with a fork. Do not overcook, or the fish will dry out.

Step 5: Warm the Tortillas

  • Heat tortillas in a dry skillet or microwave until soft and pliable. Keep them wrapped in a clean kitchen towel to stay warm.

Step 6: Assemble the Tacos

  • Place a fillet on each tortilla. Top with slaw, a drizzle of sauce, and optional extras like avocado slices or pickled jalapeños. Serve immediately with lime wedges.

Notes

  • Use fresh tilapia fillets for the best texture and flavor.
  • Pat the fish dry before seasoning to help the spices stick.
  • Don’t overcrowd the skillet to ensure even cooking.
  • Make the slaw ahead of time for extra flavor.
  • Warm tortillas properly so they don’t crack when folding.
