Ingredients

  • ¼ cup White Sugar
  • ¼ cup Shortening Butter
  • 1 Packet Yeast (7 grams)
  • ¼ cup Water
  • ¾ cup Milk
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 3 ½ cups All-Purpose Flour
  • Oil For Frying

For The Glaze:

  • 2 tablespoons Melted Butter
  • 2 cups Powdered Sugar
  • ½ cup Milk

Instructions

The dough is made as follows:

  • Let the yeast sit in room-temperature warm water for about 10 minutes.
  • In a saucepan, heat milk to a warm, but not boiling temperature. Allow it to cool after being removed from the heat.
  • Mix sugar, shortening, and salt together in a mixing bowl using a paddle attachment for about 2 minutes.
  • Let the milk come to room temperature after it has been cooled.
  • After adding the yeast-water mixture, add the egg and vanilla extract.
  • Using a dough hook attachment, gradually add the flour. Adding a little at a time will help the dough form into a ball.
  • Make the dough by kneading it on a floured surface for about five minutes.
  • Let the dough double in size in an oiled bowl for about an hour.
  • Prepare a floured surface and roll out the dough to a thickness of 1/2 inch. Cut out donut shapes with a cookie cutter, and make a hole in the center.
  • Line a tray with parchment paper and place the cut-out donuts on it.

For Proofing:

  • Cover the donuts with plastic wrap and refrigerate them overnight to proof them.
  • Allow the dough to rest for about one hour if you are cooking them immediately.

The Glaze should be applied as follows:

  • Melt the butter and combine it with the powdered sugar and milk to make the glaze.

The cooking process:

  • A pot with about two inches of oil should be heated to 350-375°F (175-190°C).
  • Fry the donuts until they turn golden brown, about 1 minute, turning them to cook all sides.
  • Let the donuts drain on a cooling rack after removing them from the oil.
  • Donuts should be dipped into the hot glaze and then placed back on the rack to set.
  • I hope you enjoy your homemade Shipley Donuts!
